Details Emerge of a Secret Committee Tasked With Power Sharing in Azimio

Power sharing in Azimio; details have emerged of a secret committee tasked with creating a formula to share elective and appointive seats.

Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition party has established a committee to determine the formula to be used in sharing seats if they win the august polls.

However, a section of leaders in the coalition are unhappy lot accusing the ‘big brothers’ of alienating small parties.

The committee was formed after the unveiling of Narc Kenya’s Martha Karua as Raila Odinga’s running mate.

The committee members were hand-picked by President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila from Jubilee Party and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

According to a local publication, the committee has been tasked with the primary responsibility of allocating government positions – elective and appointive – to the coalition partners, with the insiders noting that ODM and Jubilee were construed as the main beneficiaries.

However, sources revealed that representatives of the two political parties have failed to agree on a number of key positions.

Of the main contention is the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government, which both ODM and Jubilee are interested in.

Jubilee wants to retain Fred Matiang’i as the Interior Cabinet Secretary, while ODM wants the position to its member. 

The Jubilee Party wants the Ministries of Health, Water and Irrigation, and Defense to be reserved for it.

President Uhuru Kenyatta’s party has recommended former Chief of Defence Forces Gen (Rtd) Julius Waweru Karangi for the defense CS post, while Mutahi Kagwe fronted to remain at the helm of the Ministry of Health.

On the other side, the ODM seeks to retain control of the ministries of devolution, education, industrialization, and transportation.

Makueni governor Kivutha Kibwana is being considered for Devolution, while former UNCTAD Secretary-General, Mukhisa Kituyi, is being linked to the Ministry of Industrialisation.

Martha Karua on the other side has complete discretion over who would fill the position of Attorney General.

Fred Ngumo and Henry Kosgey, a former minister are being considered for Raila Odinga’s political advisor position.

Mugambi Imanyara, the former chairman of the Kenya Bureau of Statistics (KEBS), has also been linked to a Raila Odinga administration advisory position.
