Dog food, unsafe groundnuts recovered as KEBS conducts crackdown

A targeted enforcement operation by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has led to the seizure of several uncertified products in parts of Kajiado and Nairobi counties.
A targeted enforcement operation by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has led to the seizure of several uncertified products in parts of Kajiado and Nairobi counties.
In a statement on Friday, July 25, KEBS said the operation was conducted in Karen, Ngong town, and Kiserian, leading to the recovery of a range of uncertified goods.
“KEBS Market Surveillance team conducted enforcement operations in Karen, Ngong town, and Kiserian in Kajiado County, seizing uncertified roasted nuts, dog food, brown sugar, and various animal feeds,” the agency said.
According to KEBS, the items lacked the mandatory Standardization Mark (SM), a key indicator that a product has met the required safety and quality benchmarks set by the body.
“These products lacked the mandatory Standardization Mark (SM), indicating their quality and safety were unverified and posing potential health risks to consumers. This operation is part of KEBS continuous efforts to ensure only certified and safe products are available in the market,” the statement added.
This comes two months after KEBS raised an alarm over the sale of substandard electronic appliances in the country.

In a statement issued on Thursday, May 15, KEBS revealed that its surveillance team had seized several electronic appliances being sold in Nairobi CBD and Mombasa.
One of the items seized included power extensions and sockets.
In this case, the sockets were noted to have lacked essential safety features, which pose a risk to many Kenyans at home.
“These substandard universal socket outlets and household appliances were found to lack essential safety features, such as shutters and an earthing mechanism, which pose significant risks of electrocution. This operation is part of ongoing efforts to ensure consumer safety and maintain product standards,” the statement read.
Additionally, KEBS indicated that most of the substandard devices were labelled in foreign languages, which is against the set standards.
“Items that were exclusively labelled in a foreign language, in this case Chinese, which is against the requirements of the standard, were seized, as they do not meet the labelling requirements for products sold in the Kenyan market,” the statement added.
