Gachagua narrates how he convinced Kindiki to leave Deputy President Position for him after hours of negotiations.

During a 17-hour impasse, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua recounted how he persuaded Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof. Kithure Kindiki to give up the second-in-command position for him.

Speaking during a service of thanksgiving on Sunday in Tharaka Nithi, DP Gachagua claimed that when President William Ruto was looking for his deputy, he had both him and CS Kindiki as top contenders.

DP Gachagua claimed that they were both qualified for the position on the basis of merit, making it difficult for President Ruto to make a decision.

“When the president was looking for a running mate he saw that I am competent and also the professor is competent and he was stuck. I am a hard worker and the professor is also a hard worker. I am honest and the professor is honest. We were stuck for almost 17 hours,” said Gachagua.

President Ruto, therefore, asked the duo to have a talk and deliberate on who will take up the country’s second-top state job.

It was in their meeting, DP Gachagua added, that they agreed to have him take the role and that CS Kindiki would be awarded a plump state job.

“He (Ruto) told us to sit down with the professor and we talked and I told him that I am a bit older so niwachie mimi niendelee na wewe tukipata upatiwe ingine kubwa,” he said as he thanked Kindiki for agreeing to the arrangement.

Prof. Kindiki was one of the most likely contenders to be chosen as a running mate during the political campaign season, however, President Ruto declared that DP Gachagua (then Mathira MP) had made the cut.

CS Kindiki was praised by DP Gachagua for the work he is carrying out on his docket, particularly the way he is addressing the banditry in Northern Kenya.

He expressed confidence that he will permanently subdue the threat and gave him the state’s full backing.

“He had not disappointed the president and I. He works hard and he is committed. He is working so hard on the banditry in Northern Kenya and we support you and when you succeed you will have given this county a lot of respect.”
