Eleven Kenyatta University students dead with several others injured after their bus was involved in an accident.

At least 11 Kenyatta University students have died in a grisly road accident involving their school bus and a trailer, Voi Sub-county Police Commander Ibrahim Daffala has confirmed.

Acccording to reports, 10 students died on the spot while another one died in hospital.

42 students sustained serious injuries while four had slight wounds.

“The accident occurred at a time when it was raining heavily. The lorry tried to move away from the road to avoid a head-on collision leading to the accident,” Daffala stated.

The accident is said to have occured in Maungu, Voi, in Taita Taveta county, along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.

The school bus was carrying public health students who were heading to Mombasa for an academic trip.

The trailer was heading to Nairobi at the time the accident occurred.

The school bus was carrying 58 passengers.

About four students escaped unhurt. They were taken to Maungu Police Station awaiting further processes.

Tens of occupants of the ill-fated bus who were injured were rushed to the Moi County Referral Hospital in Voi.

From the photos circulating online, the university bus appeared to be hit on the left side by the trailer which mostly affected the students seating in the rear seats.

Some of the students were seen motionless on the ground as eyewitnesses attempted to rescue the injured before police arrived.

Additionally, seats from the bus and other materials belonging to the students were scattered on the ground as it continued raining.

The accident resulted in traffic build-up as motorists stopped to stare in shock at the horrific accident scene. Police were however quick to guide the motorists to avoid a traffic snarl up.
