Ex-Mungiki leader Maina Njenga released after suspected adduction, dumped in Limuru at night

Ex-Mungiki leader Maina Njenga released after suspected adduction, dumped in Limuru at night.

According to his lawyer Ndegwa Njiru, Maina Njenga was released on Sunday night after 24 hours of abduction.

Njenga was dumped in Limuru, Kiambu County at about 10.15 pm and offered fare home.

He then hopped onto a motorbike to his Banana home where he had been picked up by his alleged abductors on Saturday night.

It was after he arrived home that he called his lawyers and relatives to tell them of the release.

His lawyer Ndegwa Njiru confirmed the release and accused the police of being behind the kidnapping.

“Client Maina Njenga was finally released by the rogue police hit squad after our press conference,” he said.

His brother Njoroge Kamunya also confirmed Njenga the released.

“We will meet in court for the case that we have. He is okay for now though traumatised,” he said.

The lawyer did not reveal the circumstances of his arrest on Saturday, and if Njenga had been interrogated during his 24-hour detainment.

According to Njiru, the abduction was conducted by government operatives.

Maina Njenga release comes after Azimio leaders called for his unconditional release stating that he was being persecuted for being in opposition.

Azimio coalition further alleged that the government was frustrating Njenga ahead of a pre-trial hearing after he was charged in July for planning mass protests.

Njenga is expected in Makadara court on Monday for a pre-trial of his case.

The police are yet to comment on the issue.

It is not the first time the Ex-Mungiki leader has been arrested under unclear circumstances.

In May he was also arrested from his father’s home in Kiserian and detained for days before being arraigned.

Njenga was later released on a Sh200,000 bond after he was charged for allegedly playing a huge role in planning anti-government demonstrations.

In May this year, Njenga made headlines when police raided his three homes in Nairobi, Nakuru, and Laikipia counties. This followed claims they recovered weapons from the Nakuru home.

The recovery was made on May 12 when the police raided Njenga’s home in Ngomongo village in Bahati, Nakuru.

His family says the drama surrounding Njenga is political over politics in Central Kenya.
