Five Chinese nationals kidnapped in the Congo

Five Chinese nationals have been kidnapped in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

According to the Chinese embassy in the country, five Chinese citizens were kidnapped when a group of “unknown” gunmen raided a mining firm in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in Central Africa on Sunday.

According to a Sunday statement published by the embassy, the incident occurred early that morning in South Kivu province (link in Chinese). According to media accounts, it happened near the village of Mukera.

The security situation in the provinces of Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu, according to the embassy, is “very problematic and harsh,” with “malignant situations” such as armed robbery and kidnapping involving Chinese residents occurring often.
