According to Usenge Beach Management Unit (BMU) chairman John Ochieng’, the boat was carrying seven fishermen when strong winds struck, causing it to overturn.

Five of the fishermen drowned, while one survivor managed to cling to the overturned vessel until fellow fishermen arrived and rescued him.

“Five fishermen drowned after the boat capsized due to strong winds. One fisherman survived after clinging to the overturned boat until fellow fishermen arrived and rescued him,” Ochieng’ said.

Mr. Ochieng’ confirmed that two bodies have so far been recovered and taken to the Got Agulu Sub-County Hospital mortuary.

Search and rescue teams are continuing to comb the waters in an effort to retrieve the remaining bodies.
