Nairobi bound flight develops mechanical problems mid-air forcing it to turn back to Paris, two hours after takeoff.

The pilot announced that the flight was experiencing technical issues after the aircraft took off from Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport and was headed towards Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

The Boeing 787-900 Dreamliner was experiencing issues with its de-icing system, which meant that one of the engines couldn’t clear the ice, the captain said to the passengers before explaining he had to return to Paris.

“There is no way we can get to Nairobi and we have to turn back,” the pilot announced to anxious passengers.

“We also have to refuel as we have too much fuel to land at Charles de Gaulle, but that’s nothing to worry about.” the pilot reportedly said.

The pilot then circled back from Italian airspace near the city of Verona, dumping the fuel before landing back in Paris at around 3 pm.

The rescheduled flight was due to depart at 2100 Paris time on Monday and arrive in Nairobi at 0630 Kenyan time on Tuesday morning.

However, upon arrival at the Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, there were further delays as the airline worked to resolve the issues.

“Unfortunately, your flight AF814 from Paris (CDG) to Nairobi (NBO) on 16.10.2023 has been delayed. We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience. KLM will keep you informed of any updates,” read a statement from the company in part.

This comes days after two Kenyan planes bound for the UK and Kenya had medical and security emergencies.

The first incident was reported on October 10 after a plane from the UK had to make an emergency landing in France after a passenger developed medical complications.

On the other hand, a UK military jet intercepted a plane destined for London Heathrow and diverted it to London Stansted Airport after security concerns were raised. No serious issue was established on the plane.
