President Ruto honours late Francis Ogolla, former chief of defence during the Kenya Air Force’s 60th-anniversary fete.

President William Ruto and Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale led the troops in marking the celebrations on Saturday, June 8, at the Moi Air Base in Eastleigh.

During the celebrations, Ruto honoured the late CDF for his service and sacrifice to the country.

The deceased army man’s son Joel was present to receive the symbolic sword award posthumously given to his father as an appreciation for his service and sacrifice throughout the decades he served in the Air Force.

Francis Ogolla’s run in Kenya Air Force Ogolla began his career as a second-tier lieutenant in the Kenyan Air Force after joining the armed forces in 1984.

This was after his years of training as a fighter pilot with the US Air Force.

After over three decades of service, Ogolla rose the ranks in 2018 to be the commander of the Kenya Air Force, a subsidiary of the larger defence forces.

He served in the post until 2023, when President William Ruto appointed him to the helm of the armed forces, taking over from General Robert Kibochi, who had served for four years.

The fallen army boss was an alumnus of France’s École Militaire de Paris, the National Defence College of Kenya, Egerton University and the University of Nairobi.

Ogolla became the first chief of defence to die while in office; he was slated for retirement in 2025.

Ogolla took over from Kibochi, who had been the head of the Kenya Army.
