Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has opened a can of worms after alleging that there is a killer squad in the police service formed under President William Ruto’s orders.
While attending a church service in Kirinyaga County, Gachagua claimed that the squad consists of highly trained individuals, an order that was seconded by the National Intelligence Service (NIS) headed by Noordin Haji.
He linked the squad to the unexplained death of Albert Ojwang’, alleging that there are many Kenyans who have met their untimely deaths at the hands of the squad, and the cases have been expertly covered up.
“This issue (Ojwang’s death) is just a tip of the iceberg. Hundreds of young people have been tortured to death by a special squad of 101 officers that was set up on the instruction of William Ruto and seconded to NIS, and highly trained on abductions, torture, killings and cover-ups,” Gachagua claimed.
Gachagua stated that President Ruto should be held responsible for the deaths, calling for a lawful penalty, and the intervention of the international community to take action against President Ruto.
“William Ruto cannot run away from these deaths. He is responsible, and Kenyans will punish him for that,” he noted.

The death of Ojwang’ has been stringed in a heaping controversy after police testimonies on the mysterious death have shown stark discrepancies.
The timing of events, as narrated by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) director Amin Mohamed, under oath, showed that Ojwang’ was found unconscious in his cell at 01:39 on June 8.
He added that Ojwang’ was taken to Mbagathi Hospital, where he was received at around 2 am and later pronounced dead.
CCTV footage from the said hospital, however, shows a police car carrying Ojwang’ driving into the compound at 1:35, and he stayed in the vehicle for 24 minutes before being received by medics.
A report from the hospital showed that Ojwang’s was brought in dead and his body was cold, unresponsive, had a swollen face and had a cut at the back of his head.
Public uproar over the suspected police killing has sparked public protests calling for the arrest of Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Kenya Police Service, Eliud Kipkoech Lagat, who made a defamation complaint against him, leading to Ojwang’s arrest.
