Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has fired back at President William Ruto, after the President challenged him to provide evidence supporting his claims that government officials were behind the destruction of property in Mt Kenya region.

Speaking on Wednesday, July 9, at State House, President Ruto said Gachagua should write a statement on the perpetrators of violence and destruction of properties in Mt Kenya.

“I have heard someone claiming that the government organized goons to destroy and burn businesses belonging to one particular community. If that person is a real man, let him tell us who these people are. Let him go and record a statement, naming the specific individuals, leaders, and locations involved,” said Ruto.

The Head of State warned that if the claims are false, they are not only misleading but also deeply insensitive to the victims who are still reeling from the loss and destruction of their businesses and properties.

“Otherwise, if you are playing politics with businesses of people who are shedding tears because they have lost their property, then shame on you,” he added.

In response, Gachagua questioned how he could report the perpetrators to the police, claiming that it was the police themselves who supervised the destruction and looting of property.

The former DP went on to allege that President Ruto was responsible for the violence witnessed in the region.

“How do we report state-sponsored militia and those who organized them to the police who supervised them as they burned and looted property?

“You are asking us to name those who organised? I named you as the person responsible for unleashing violence against the community that made you President. How do I report you to the same police you directed to supervise and protect the militia as they brutalized Kenyans?” he posed.

Gachagua also criticized Ruto’s directive to the police to shoot in the legs anyone found torching or destroying businesses.

Further, the DCP party leader threatened to report President Ruto to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

“You have even gone further to add insult to injury by directing them to shoot innocent Kenyans in the legs. You could not even send condolences to the dead.

“You lack feelings and humanity. We shall report you not to the Kenyan police but the International Criminal Court, an address you are familiar with,” Gachagua added.
