Gatundu traders celebrate Uhuru birthday, apologise for being ‘misled’ over 2022 elections

Traders at Gatundu South market celebrated former President Uhuru Kenyatta birthday with a heartfelt song highlighting their difficulties since he left power

Traders at Gatundu South market celebrated former President Uhuru Kenyatta birthday with a heartfelt song highlighting their difficulties since he left power.

In honor of former president Uhuru Kenyatta’s 62nd birthday,  a section of residents of Gatundu South threw a party to celebrate him.

The residents and vendors breaking into song and dance as they sliced a cake to commemorate the occasion at Gatundu Market on Thursday expressed their need for Uhuru and begged him to come see them.

The locals, led by Kamau Migwi, expressed their gratitude for the development initiatives the area saw under Uhuru’s leadership and that they will always be in debt to the former leader.

Migwi noted that multi-billion development projects were implemented in the area, citing the tarmacking of roads, construction of Gatundu Level Five Hospital, Gatundu Modern Market as well as mega water projects.

Migwi also noted that the former president initiated the first university in Gatundu South – Mama Ngina University in Mutomo village – which he says revolutionized higher education and spurred growth in the area.

The locals said Uhuru was a humble and down-to-earth leader, adding that they regretted not heeding his advice before last year’s general elections.

Uhuru had been at the forefront of rallying support for Azimio leader Raila Odinga’s presidential bid, calling on the Mt Kenya region to support him.

He had also warned the region against going against his advice, saying they’d regret a ‘wrong’ decision.

Sovinger Bibiana, a former councilor and local leader in Gatundu South, said Uhuru was still the kingpin of Mt Kenya and his absence was hurting peace and unity in the region.

Local resident Nyambura Kimani, a market trader, hailed the former president as a development-oriented leader, noting that he changed the face of the region through infrastructure projects.

Nyambura said Uhuru’s absence was felt even in the villages, noting that he was always there to help in times of tragedy, including sickness.

They lamented that the locals have been ‘misled’ into rejecting and condemning their ‘son’, noting that life has become unbearable with the current regime.

The increase in taxation by Ruto’s administration has made things more difficult specifically with the increase in fuel prices and other commodities.

The high prices have partly been attributed to an increase in taxes by the government.

While Kenyans have resorted to adjusting their needs, the harsh economic times have left businesses in struggling mode. Others have had to close down.
