Mary Chebukati has appealed to social media users to desist from constant bashing of her family disclosing that they have had to endure a tough time from online attacks.

Speaking during the burial of her late husband Wafula Chebukati in Kiminini on Saturday, Mary recollected what she described as her only fond memory on social media, which she said she cherishes amidst constant bashing of her family in the past.

“The only positive thing social media has done to me is to give me a daughter,” she said.

“The rest of the time they have bashed us, attacked us but there is one thing chairman said to us, ignore those people.”

She lamented how netizens often used to lash at the late Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chair, and other times even “killing him on social media”.

“Social media has killed him so many times, in fact, every time I got so many calls coming in, I knew social media had killed my husband,” Mary said, adding that she had to reach out to those who called her to alleviate their fears.

Mary pleaded with social media users to desist from directing backlash at her late husband or his family following and to leave them at peace.

“Now that he has rested, I hope that they will give us some peace, it has been so difficult,” she said.

Mary further revealed her experience when she initially had it easier given that Chebukati’s first name was widely unknown.

She however said she became susceptible to scrutiny including from a member of Parliament during a vetting session because of her husband’s status.

The burial event, was graced by a section of leaders including President William Ruto, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi among other leaders.

The former chairman passed on after a prolonged illness at a hospital in Nairobi.

Chebukati is succeeded by his widow Mary, two sons – Emmanuel and Jonathan and a daughter, Rachel Nekesa.
