Government through the Interior ministry clarifies the gazette declaring Monday a public holiday as UDA lawmaker warns civil servants

Government through the Interior ministry clarifies the gazette declaring Monday a public holiday as UDA lawmaker warns civil servants.

On March 17, the Ministry of Interior reported a widely circulated Gazette Notice that claimed to designate Monday as a public holiday.

According to allegations, Interior CS Kithure Kindiki signed the gazette notice in accordance with the proclamation of a mass action made by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

So, it is said that Kenyans were given the day off to participate in the Azimio La Umoja-called rally.

“It is notified for general information that in the exercise of the powers conferred by sections 3 as read with section 2 (2) of the Public Holidays Act (Cap. 110), the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Co-ordination of National Government declares Monday, 20th March 2023 a public holiday marking Mass Action Day,” the fake notice claimed.

The Ministry reiterated that March 20, was a normal working day, contrary to the opposition’s demands.

In a joint interview with Mount Kenya vernacular Radio and TV stations, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua noted that Raila has no power within the law to declare a Public Holiday.

While responding to Narc-Kenya Leader Martha Karua’s request for a Public Holiday, Raila, on Tuesday, March 14, declared Monday the 20th of March will be a public holiday.”

Meanwhile, while responding to Raila’s statement, outspoken Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi threatened to deal with civil servants who will honour Raila’s directive.

“I have heard that Raila has ‘declared’ Monday, March 20, 2023, a public holiday, let us find out that there is no civil servant who will not report to work. We are eagerly waiting for you,” Sudi said in a video shared on Facebook.

Oscar Sudi, a close ally of President William Ruto accused Azimio of being insincere to Kenyans.

“Please don’t show Kenyans your ignorance. Let me ask you, during the campaigns you were boosting how you were going to win the elections. Now you say that if you won there could be no protests but I want to warn you to stop taking Kenyans for a ride. If your victory has been stolen five times it means you have a problem with yourself,” he added.
