Government flags fake Facebook accounts impersonating institutions to dupe Kenyans

Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) has flagged Facebook accounts impersonating the institution
The Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) has flagged Facebook accounts impersonating the institution, warning members of the public against engaging with it.
In a statement on Tuesday, June 25, KALRO cautioned that the fake accounts are using its name and logo to mislead Kenyans and possibly collect personal information under false pretenses.
“We wish to notify the general public that impersonators have created fake Facebook accounts using KALRO Logo and the name KALRO.
“We wish to clarify that the accounts are not affiliated to KALRO and therefore all members of the public should not engage with the fake account and share personal information or respond to any messages from the fake accounts using the KALRO logo and name,” the statement read.
KALRO further distanced itself from any content or communication originating from the impostor accounts, noting that such information should be treated as unauthorized.
“Any information shared by this fake account is not authorized by KALRO and we shall not be liable for any misleading content, claims or transactions made through it.
“We advise the public to verify official communication through our official accounts, email and website,” the statement added.

This comes barely a week after the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) has issued a warning over an individual falsely claiming to be the company’s Managing Director and CEO.
In a statement on Friday, June 20, KETRACO said the contacts that the impersonator has been presenting to unsuspecting members of the public are not associated with the company’s CEO.
“It has come to our attention that an individual is using the mobile number 0735982112, landline number 0202717001, and email ceo@ketraco.go.ke has been falsely presenting themselves as the MD and CEO of KETRACO. These contacts do not belong to our MD & CEO or KETRACO. We believe this misrepresentation is for malicious purposes,” the company said.
As such, KETRACO urged the public to be cautious when interacting with individuals purporting to represent the corporation.
“We strongly advise the public to exercise extreme caution and be vigilant against such fraudulent schemes. KETRACO will not be held responsible for any losses or damages incurred due to engaging with individuals who misrepresent themselves as our officials,” the statement read.
