Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has disclosed that the expansion of the Nairobi-Mombasa highway will begin in 2026.

Speaking on Monday, December 8, during the 98th Kenya Music and Cultural Festival Gala in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, Kindiki said President William Ruto will launch the expansion of the road in February 2026.

The DP noted that the government has secured money to expand the first section of the road between Machakos and Emali town.

“We are expediting the development of Kenya, we are expanding the Nairobi-Mombasa, and we have money to build the first section of the road from Machakos all the way to Emali.

“The President will be launching in February the expansion of Mombasa Road,” said DP Kindiki.

Kindiki’s announcement comes months after the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) rejected Everstrong Capital’s Public Private Partnership (PPP) deal to construct the Nairobi-Mombasa (Usahihi) expressway.

In a notice on August 12, the authority said that it had received a proposal for the design, build, finance, operate, maintain, and transfer (DBFOMT) of the expressway project under a PPP model, covering a 459-kilometer corridor from Mlolongo in Machakos County to Bonje in Mombasa County.

KeNHA disclosed that the proposal was rejected following a thorough review of the report by the committee in line with the provisions of the PPP Act of 2021.

According to the authority, the proposal did not meet the relevant criteria in line with the provisions of the PPP Act of 2021, and the committee recommended that it be abandoned.

“The PPP Committee, National Treasury & Economic Planning, delivered its decision during its 54th Ordinary PPP Committee meeting held on 2nd July, 2025.

“To the effect that the committee determined that the proposal does not meet the relevant criteria and should be abandoned in accordance with Section 43(11)(c) of the PPP Act,2021,” KeNHA stated.

However, the committee directed Everstrong Capital to restructure the project to meet the evaluation criteria through the expansion of the existing Nairobi-Mombasa highway.
