Governor Wavinya on spot for reading the wrong oath during Senate grilling

Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti was on the spot while appearing before a Senate committee after she read the wrong oath

Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti was on the spot while appearing before a Senate committee after she read the wrong oath.

Appearing before the Senate Public Accounts Committee on Tuesday, October 29, the chairperson of the Committee had to make the governor re-take the oath after she had read it wrongly.

“Governor, which oath did you read? Are you reading an oath in your mind or the oath that is presented to you? I don’t think else (the word) appears,” the committee chairperson reprimanded.

The Governor had read the oath, “I, Wavinya Ndeti, do solemnly swear that the evidence that I shall give before this committee in respect to the matter before the committee shall be the truth, the whole truth, nothing else but the truth so help me God.”

Following the error, the governor had to re-read the oath with help from leaders present after the chairperson directed her to re-read without the ‘else’ word.

“I, Wavinya Ndeti, do solemnly swear that the evidence that I shall give before this committee in respect to the matter before the committee shall be the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help me God,” she rectified.

Wavinya Ndeti was accompanied by her deputy, Francis Mwangangi, and members of the Machakos County Executive team.

The Governor and the county management appeared before the Senate Public Accounts Committee for the interrogation on the report of the Auditor General for the financial year 2022/2023.

She was also grilled for governance in the county including Ksh663 million unaccounted expenditure.

The Governor lauded the Senate for its work on demanding accountability from county bosses alleging that it is the best way to foster democracy in the counties.

“Accountability is a key aspect of democracy and good governance and I applaud the Senate of Kenya for dutifully conducting its mandate to ensure we continue strengthening our institutions,” Ndeti wrote on her official Facebook page on Tuesday.
