Haiti Prime Minister requests for more Kenyan police officers

Inspector General (IG) of Police Japhet Koome reveals that Haiti had requested for more Kenyan police officers to be deployed to the Caribbean nation
Inspector General (IG) of Police Japhet Koome reveals that Haiti had requested for more Kenyan police officers to be deployed to the Caribbean nation.
In a statement on Saturday, IG Koome remarked that the request was made by Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille during a security brief to the United Nations Security Council earlier in the week.
Already, Kenya has 200 police officers on standby to be deployed to Haiti should the request be okayed.
The 200 officers were part of the 400 contingent that completed pre-deployment training before the first batch of 200 police officers was deployed on June 24.
“During the security brief to the UN Security Council this week, the Prime Minister called for the deployment of additional Kenyan police officers in Haiti, expressing his optimism that the Multinational Security Support (MSS) team will control the gangs,” IG Koome briefed the nation.
Additionally, it was reported that Conille had promised his government’s unwavering support to the Kenyan police officers deployed in his country.
IG Koome’s statement was made hours after images circulated of Kenyan police officers guarding the United States Embassy in Haiti.

Explaining the scope of their operations, IG Koome remarked that Kenyan police had embarked on joint operational, logistical and induction training with their Haitian National Police counterparts.
Kenya is expected to be joined by at least six other countries in the MSS that was approved by the United Nations on October 2023.
This has proceeded according to the envisioned pace as UN member nations have delayed in contributing funds that would support the mission.
The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the UN Integrated Office in Haiti, Maria Isabel Salvador called upon the international community to make their financial contributions to the Mission.
According to the United Nations Security Council, less than Ksh3 billion has been raised through the UN Trust Fund against a target of Ksh12 billion.
