IG Koome claims Azimio politicians hired dead bodies during demonstrations

Koome alleges Azimio politicians hired dead bodies from the mortuary and claimed they were of people killed by the police during demonstrations.

On Tuesday, Inspector General Japhet Koome finally broke silence over the anti-government protests which happened last month.

Speaking on Tuesday in Nyeri during a visit to Kiganjo Police Training College, he claimed that politicians hired dead bodies from the mortuary and claimed they were of people killed during the protests.

“It is so unfortunate that some senior members of the society go to the mortuary hiring dead bodies, calling the media and telling them that these people were killed by the police. How low can some of our leaders sink?’ Koome posed.

Koome defended the National Police Service (NPS) against accusations of brutality and murder of unarmed opposition protesters contesting death figures blamed on the police as fictitious.

“I want to say that our officers are great protectors of human rights. We have intelligence that these politicians are hiring bodies from morgues and taking pictures which are circulated through social,” he said on Tuesday.

“This is aimed at demoralizing our officers and also portraying my officers in bad right in the international arena,” the IG said.

Why bipartisan talks with Raila are yet to resume, Ruto

Azimio leader Raila Odinga had claimed that at least 50 people have been killed since March when the opposition coalition announced the resumption of weekly mass protests against the government.

Interior PS Raymond Omollo in a statement said that one police officer was killed and 305 law enforcement officers seriously injured.

However, President Ruto congratulated the police and instead told the Azimio leaders they owed Kenyans an apology over recent protests that led to deaths and injuries.

“It is dishonest for the opposition to pretend to be concerned about the well-being of the people yet they led demonstrations that led to loss of lives and destruction of property. They should be ashamed of themselves,” he said.
