Indian-born international terror suspect arrested for orchestrating global attacks while in his hideout in Nairobi, Kenya

Indian-born international terror suspect arrested for orchestrating global attacks while in his hideout in Nairobi, Kenya.

A terror suspect accused of planning global attacks while living in Nairobi, Kenya, for three years, has been arrested at the New Delhi Airport in India on Thursday.

Indian media outlets reported that the specialized counter-terrorism law enforcement agency in India, the National Investigational Agency, arrested the suspect shortly after arriving at the airport.

Investigations by the agency revealed that the suspect went into hiding in Nairobi in 2020 and coordinated two terror attacks in India.

Additionally, he was charged with spreading extreme ideologies and enlisting young people in the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist organization.

The agency revealed that the Indian-born suspect was responsible for a planned attack whereby one of his followers was on his way to plant a pressure cooker Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) at Kadri Manjunatha Temple in the Southwestern city of Mangaluru.

However, the plan backfired when the device exploded accidentally while the follower was on his way to the temple using a Tuk-tuk.

“The suspect had been in active touch with the other accused persons in the case, and was actively involved in the planning and execution of the conspiracy,” the agency said.

NIA said that investigations regarding the suspect and his followers in the case are ongoing to uncover the attacks the group was planning.

A report by the United States government on Country Reports on Terrorism 2020 revealed that Kenya was among the countries that suffered several attacks primarily along the Kenya-Somalia border.

IEDs and ambushes targeting Kenyan law enforcement officers and important structures were highlighted among the primary means of attack in the country.

The report, however, noted that Kenya plays a leading role in regional crime terror cooperation. This involved the disruption of several ISIS-planned attacks while also responding to numerous terrorist incidents.

“Kenyan security forces continued to demonstrate improved procedures in line with its international human rights obligations and commitments for the protection of human rights in response to terrorist threats and attacks,” the report said.
