Police launch probe after GSU officer mysteriously buried at church compound in Migori County.

Police in Migori County are investigating a puzzling case in which one of their colleagues was buried at a church compound in Kamagambo under unusual circumstances.

Constable Dan Ayoo Obura, a police officer based at the General Service Unit (GSU) headquarters in Nairobi, passed away on March 27 after falling ill.

His body was buried the following day at a church in Opapo village.

According to his wife, Obura became unwell while they were at home, prompting her to take him to the church for prayers.

However, he died on the way, and they arrived at the church at around 8 pm.

The next day, the woman obtained a burial permit from a local assistant chief—who was reportedly unaware of the burial location.

Armed with the permit, she and a small group of church members proceeded to bury Obura within the church compound, citing religious rites.

However, concerns have been raised by another family member, who told police they had previously complained about the church, alleging that Obura had been radicalized by its teachings.

The officer’s father had even reported the matter to authorities, leading to a police visit to the church, though it remains unclear what action was taken at the time.

Investigators are now considering exhuming the body to conduct an autopsy and establish the exact cause of death.

A police source indicated that if necessary, they will seek a court order for the exhumation as part of the probe.

Police have assured the public that the matter is under thorough investigation.
