Juliana Cherera and three other dissenting commissioners to file personal responses to Raila’s petition

Juliana Cherera and three other dissenting commissioners to file personal responses to Raila’s petition challenging presidential results at the Supreme Court.

In the petition submitted by former prime minister Raila Odinga, four Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners who disagreed with the declaration of Willliam Ruto as president-elect are scheduled to submit separate affidavits in support of their claims of mathematical error.

On Thursday, August 25, one of the commissioners, who asked to remain anonymous, said that the decision was informed by Raila’s appeal, in which each of them is listed as a respondent.

The commissioner emphasized that they were not acting as private people but rather as serving IEBC officials when they filed the affidavits.

The four dissenting Commissioners are vice chairperson Juliana Cherera, Justus Nyang’aya, Francis Wanderi, and Irene Masit.

“We have already identified our lawyers and given them directives. We need our own lawyers because the prayers Raila Odinga has given to the court in relation to the case are different from what we have been listed to answer,” he stated.

Further, the Commissioner refuted claims that they were in collision with the Azimio la Umoja team, adding that they were independent and non-partisan in the electoral process.

The IEBC official added that they were ready to testify in the Supreme Court should they be asked to do so by the 7-bench Judge led by Chief Justice Martha Koome.

“We will always stand with the truth and that’s why we need to have our own lawyers.”

In Raila’s petition, the four dissenting commissioners are named as respondents alongside IEBC Chairperson, Wafula Chebulati, commissioners Abdi Guliye, and Boya Molu.

Juliana Cherera and her team had dissented the victory of Ruto over claims that they were not involved in the verification process of the presidential tallies before the announcement by IEBC chair Wafula Chebukati.
