Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka now says he is ready to take over from Azimio leader Raila Odinga as the official opposition leader

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka now says he is ready to take over from Azimio leader Raila Odinga as the official opposition leader.

In a statement on Tuesday, August 27, Kalonzo said his team has few numbers in Parliament but has huge support from Kenyans.

The former Vice President’s team includes Babu Owino, Peter Salasya, Eugene Wamalwa, and Jeremiah Kioni among others.

“Yes, I am ready to be the Leader of the Official Opposition. This is the team. You will see the Opposition like never before. We may be light in numbers in Parliament, but outside, we have the People of Kenya,” Kalonzo stated.

His remarks come days after Odinga announced that he would not be very active in Kenyan politics moving forward.

Speaking on August 21 during a joint media briefing with Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, the former premier said he would be focusing his attention on his African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson campaign.

Odinga noted that it will be a transitional phase from active participation in Kenyan politics and moving to African continental politics.

“At the moment, I am involved in the campaigns but that does not mean that Kenya ceases to exist. I am not going to be very active in Kenyan politics henceforth, as I continue to focus my attention on the continental campaign.

“It is a transitional phase from active participation in Kenyans to moving towards African continental politics,” he remarked.

The ODM leader will face Mahamoud Ali Youssouf of Djibouti, Richard Randriamandrato of Madagascar, and Anil Gayan of Mauritius in the AUC chairperson election scheduled in early 2025.
