Kalonzo criticises Ruto for allegedly terminating deal for Nairobi-Mombasa Expressway

Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has accused President William Ruto of unfairly terminating the planned construction of the Nairobi-Mombasa expressway.

Speaking on Saturday afternoon at a church service in Mututuni, Machakos County, Kalonzo claimed that the Head of State allegedly ordered the termination of the road project while it was on the verge of implementation.

Kalonzo claimed that the multi-billion-dollar project, which had been handed to a United States company, was terminated as punishment for the Ukambani region people for reportedly opposing Ruto’s regime.

While lamenting over the alleged stoppage of the project, Kalonzo said that the highway would have helped to reduce persistent road accidents and persistent traffic along the busy route.

“Even along Momabsa Road, an American conglomerate was in the process of finalising a Public Private Partnership to give out money to construct a road that would reduce accidents that have been taking place along this route,” Kalonzo commented.

“This road that passes through this region was expected to be constructed together with the one heading to Malaba. But this Nairobi-Mombasa Road project has been stopped by Ruto, and he is saying it is because of us,” he added.

However, the Wiper party leader assured the residents that the project would be implemented once the united opposition wins the next general election scheduled for August 2027.

Kalonzo’s sentiments come a month after the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced the rejection of a PPP deal with Everstrong Capital, a US infrastructure company, for the construction of the Nairobi-Mombasa expressway.

In a notice published on August 12, 2025, KeNHA stated that Everstrong Capital’s proposal for the construction of the 440-kilometre highway failed to meet certain criteria, prompting the PPP Committee to reject it.

The Authority disclosed that the decision to reject the proposal followed a thorough review of the report by the committee in line with the provisions of the PPP Act of 2021.

“The PPP Committee of the National Treasury and Economic Planning delivered its decision during its 54th Ordinary PPP Committee meeting held on July 2, 2025,” KeNHA announced.

However, despite turning down the proposal, the PPP Committee directed Everstrong Capital to restructure the project to meet the evaluation criteria through expansion of the existing Nairobi-Mombasa highway.
