Kalonzo lauds Ruto commitment to bipartisan talks as he recognizes his legitimacy as the president of Kenya.

Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka now says the Azimio coalition recognizes William Ruto’s legitimacy as the fifth President of Kenya.

Kalonzo made the remarks while attending the burial of nominated Taita Taveta MCA Constance Mwandawiro in Voi on Saturday, September 2.

He claimed that because Ruto had agreed to continue holding bipartisan talks with the opposition, the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya alliance had revised its opinion of Ruto’s legitimacy.

Despite opposition from his deputy Rigathi Gachagua, the Head of State, in Kalonzo’s opinion, had demonstrated maturity and statesmanship by supporting the national conversation.

The Wiper leader said the opposition would wait for the 2027 polls to try their luck on the presidency.

“We congratulate the president for putting his foot down and supporting the continuation of the talks,” Kalonzo stated.

“Because of his (Ruto’s) stand, we recognize him and we will wait for the next time because who knows? God’s plans may be with us next,” he added.

Kalonzo, who co-chairs the National Dialogue Committee alongside Kenya Kwanza’s Kimani Ichung’wah, said nobody would stop the talks that have since received a nod from the National Assembly and the Senate.

“We have a problem with what some people are saying. President Ruto’s deputy (Gachagua) attended a funeral in Ukambani and what he said there has left residents wondering what kind of leader he is. But we will call everyone to order,” Kalonzo said as he accused Gachagua of attempts to frustrate the peace initiative.

To end the political crisis that saw Azimio leader Raila Odinga call for public protests in opposition to what he called government injustices, the National Dialogue Committee was set up comprising Azimio and Kenya Kwanza members.

The 10-member group recently decided to negotiate on five key concerns. The cost of living, the application of the two-thirds rule for female representation, the restructuring and reorganization of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), the entrenchment of the offices of the Leader of the Official Opposition and Prime Cabinet Secretary, among other difficulties, are a few of the issues.

Azimio had early this year rejected the outcome of last year’s presidential poll, claiming their candidate, Raila, was rigged out.

Raila and his allies said they had evidence to believe that the coalition won the poll by more than two million votes, denouncing Ruto as president.
