Kalonzo Musyoka the only opposition leader attended the Mashujaa Day fete presided over by Ruto

Kalonzo Musyoka was the only opposition leader who attended the Mashujaa Day fete presided over by President Ruto.

Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka is the only opposition figure who attended this year’s Mashujaa Day national fete at the Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi.

Ruto was not even aware of his presence and was only alerted by the Majority Whip Sylvanus Osoro, who signaled to him that Kalonzo was seated at the end of the front row.

After greeting the UDA party leadership including Secretary-General Veronica Maina and Chairman Johnstone Muthama, Ruto had a tete-a-tete with the Wiper leader.

Mr. Musyoka was seated next to the outgoing Energy Cabinet Secretary (CS) Dr. Monica Juma, who has since been appointed as the National Security Advisor in President Ruto’s government.

The function was largely avoided by leaders affiliated to the Azimio political outfit.

Raila Odinga, the leader of Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya, is currently out of the country for a week-long tour of India.

Following the election of President Ruto two months ago, most Azimio-allied leaders have given national events a wide berth, including the inauguration ceremony.

Kalonzo Musyoka is among politicians who have in the recent past criticized President William Ruto’s rule.

He, alongside Azimio-allied leaders, faulted President Ruto over the lifting of the GMO food ban.

Kalonzo said the government should have had national consultation before lifting the ban.

Meanwhile, this year’s Mashujaa Day fete in Nairobi was poorly attended with many Kenyans giving the function a wide berth.

Photos showed empty white plastic seats spread out in the venue.

It is not clear why attendance is low this year compared to previous national events, although a biting economy could be attributed to the poor turnout.
