Martha Karua denies claims of bad blood with Raila Odinga on reports that Mwangi Wa Iria is poised to take her position.

On Sunday, July 9, Azimio Principal Martha Karua refuted rumors that she and coalition leader Raila Odinga will soon split.

After Karua was noticeably absent from the Kamukunji Rally on Friday, July 7, and the accompanying march to Central Park in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD), rumors of hostility between the two lawmakers began to circulate.

Raila Odinga was flanked by former Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria in place of Karua, a decision that suggested friction between the 2022 presidential candidate and his running mate.

In response to the reports, Karua said she was hosting a demonstration in Kirinyaga at the same time as the protests in the capital, hence she was not there.

The former Gichugu MP reaffirmed that, in keeping with Odinga’s expectations, she initiated the process of gathering signatures to repeal the Finance Act 2023.

This brought to rest allegations that Raila was bringing on board Mwangi wa Iria to take over his former running mate’s role.

During the nationwide demonstration on Friday, July 7, the Azimio Coalition changed its approach in an effort to put pressure on President William Ruto’s administration to lower the cost of living.

In contrast to the past, when they only conducted a large protest in Nairobi, the coalition’s principals held simultaneous rallies across the nation.

As Karua led anti-government protests in Kirinyaga, Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka kickstarted a signature collection drive in Kathiani, Machakos County.

Similarly, Democratic Action Party – Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa and Roots party leader George Wajackoya led protests in the Western.

Odinga announced that similar demonstrations would be held across the country on Wednesday, July 12.
