Katwa Kigen among six applicants for Supreme Court Judge vacancy
Court of Appeal judge, Justice Katwa Kigen, who previously served as President William Ruto’s lawyer, is among six individuals who have applied for the position of Supreme Court judge.
The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) on Wednesday, February 25, announced that it had received six applications for the position of a Supreme Court judge following the lapse of the application deadline on February 17, 2026.
Other applicants included Justice Joseph Kiplagat Sergon, Justice Warsame Mohammed, Justice Francis Kipruto Tuiyot, Anne Waceke Kiratu Makori, and Lilian Wanjiku Wachira.
“JSC advertised one vacancy for the position of Judge of the Supreme Court of Kenya on January 27, 2026. By the closure of the advert on February 17, the Commission received a total of six applications,” JSC announced.
The vacancy at the Apex court was created following the death of Justice Mohamed Ibrahim, who passed away on December 17 last year after a long battle with illness.
His death left the Supreme Court with a vacancy, prompting the Commission to begin the recruitment process to restore the court to its full capacity of seven judges.

In its announcement, JSC disclosed that it would hold a stakeholder engagement forum on March 23, 2026, ahead of the shortlisting process.
After shortlisting, the commission said it will announce interview dates for successful candidates, with the venue for the stakeholder meeting to be communicated later.
“The Commission plans to undertake a stakeholder engagement on March 23, 2026, ahead of the shortlisting process and thereafter will provide a notification of interview dates for shortlisted candidates,” JSC stated.
The final appointment will be made after interviews and recommendations, per the Constitution, before being forwarded to the President for nomination and Parliament for approval.
Meanwhile, Katwa Kigen’s application for a role at the Apex Court comes just a month after he was appointed and sworn in as a Judge of the Court of Appeal on January 27, 2026, and is currently deployed to the Nyeri station.
Kigen has in the past represented Ruto in high-profile cases, including being his defence team at the International Criminal Court (ICC) and during the 2022 presidential election petition.
