Immigration Principal Secretary Julius Bitok has revealed that the government is working on a plan to ensure that Kenyans who attain the age of 18 years in school get ID and Maisha cards on time.
As detailed during a meeting with the National Assembly Committee of Education on Tuesday, October 22, the PS announced that the government was prioritizing school registration to ensure that the students get the legal documents before they complete school.
Consequently, he added that 2024 KCSE candidates who have attained the age of 18 will get the documents before they complete their examination later this year.
Bitok explained that the move was aimed at ensuring that students do not struggle when transitioning to the university.
Students are required to have the documents when applying for loans with the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).

“We have mobilized our registration officers across the country to issue Maisha Cards to eligible candidates to enable those who qualify to join local or international universities, apply for Higher Education Loans Board, scholarships and other post-high school pursuits,” he stated.
On the other hand, the PS detailed that the government was also working on ways to ensure that applicants of Maisha cards get notified once their documents have been processed.
“As of now, we have issued 1.8 million Maisha Cards, and over 1 million have been collected. However, 569,914 cards remain uncollected.
“We have adopted a 24-hour shift and acquired additional machines to speed up the production process,” PS Bitok stated during the meeting.
