The Kenya Airports Authority has come out to refute claims that there were armed goons at the Kisumu International Airport on Saturday, February 21.

In a statement, the KAA described claims by sections of the Linda Wananchi tour organisers as inaccurate, with the authority reiterating that airport premises remained extremely secure as per protocol.

“KAA wishes to clarify that at no time were unauthorised individuals, groups or organised unlawful elements present within the airport premises,” a statement from the airport authority said.

At the back of a Linda Wananchi tour in Kakamega county, embattled Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna took to social media to claim his team had to re-route because of the presence of armed individuals at the Kisumu airport.

Sifuna pointed an accusing finger at the government, as he alleged there was a well-orchestrated plan to disrupt his tour.

The Senator went ahead to share images showing several individuals in what looked like an airport runway.

“We need to hear from KAA whether Kisumu is still an International Airport and whether they can still guarantee the safety of all passengers transiting through there. How they allowed goons to barricade the airport needs to be explained,” Sifuna stated.

However, in a rejoinder, KAA dismissed the images, instead clarifying that the images shared by Sifuna’s faction were outside the airport premises.

The statement went on, “KAA further notes that images circulating online was outside the airport perimeter and beyond KAA’s security jurisdiction.”

According to the authority, the Airport Security Committee and the Border Management Committee (BMC) jointly worked with other security agencies, maintaining full situational awareness and operational control throughout the period in question.

KAA further assured the public that airport operations remained normal, secure, and uninterrupted, with no security breach, disturbance, or compromise to passenger safety, aircraft operations, or airport infrastructure.

It further assured passengers that their safety was not at risk, noting that KAA remained committed to upholding the security and safety of their passengers as well as operational integrity as outlined in the regulations of international standards.

“We remain committed to upholding the highest standards of aviation security, safety, and operational integrity in accordance with national regulations and international aviation standards,” the statement added.
