Following recent cyber attacks on government systems, CA says Kenya is among the top three most targeted countries.

Kenya still faces a significant risk of cyberattacks, according to the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA), despite the government’s efforts to put protective measures in place.

Rosalind Muriithi, CA’s Director for Internal Audit, claims that in order to safeguard Kenyans, the government is stepping up its efforts to stop cyber threats, patch up recently found vulnerabilities, and fend off future threats.

According to Muriithi, Kenya is one of Africa’s top three most frequently attacked countries online, and the number of incidents has been rising recently.

“In 2018, 2018 cyber-attacks directed at Kenya stood at 7.7 million. In 2023, the attacks have skyrocketed to a high of 444 million, ranking Kenya among the top 3 most targeted countries in the region alongside South Africa and Nigeria,” she said.

Speaking in Kisumu on Saturday, Muriithi said CA is geared towards offering support to help build a skilled workforce that is capable of effectively protecting and defending digital systems and networks in the country.

The sentiments follow a recent cyber-attack on government systems, more so, the eCitizen platform.

The attack on the platform was a result of a Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) strategy used by hackers to flood the online services with traffic.
