Mudavadi says government is mulling nuclear energy use after recent nationwide power blackouts.

According to Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, the administration is considering using nuclear energy as a substitute for conventional power sources in the nation.

Speaking during the 44th Vihiga Cultural Festival, Mudavadi stated that Kenya is looking for other, more dependable energy sources due to the nation’s frequent blackouts.

“These days we are seeing that blackouts are disturbing, the electricity is repetitively going off, we must also as a country start looking for alternative means for bringing electricity. There is Geothermal, the is wind, there is solar, and now there is the nuclear,” the CS said.

He said Kenya will be able to obtain sufficient power to improve and transform the country’s many industries, including mining, health, and employment development in adopting nuclear energy.

In areas without proper and adequate electrical technology, the prime CS has reaffirmed that this new technology will assist open up economic developments and industrialization.

He said that Western Kenya has been severely harmed by the current state of inadequate power technology, pointing out that the region has been heavily exposed to high electricity rates, which have impeded the advancement of industry. 

The region has been dependent on a single power generating station.

“One of the challenges in the western region, about electricity, is that here in Vihiga Bungoma, Kakamega, Busia, Kisumu, sections of Nandi, etc.

We have been relying on the Muhoroni substation for electricity, and the technology there is old, which has made electricity to be very expensive,” he said.
