According to reports, hundreds of Tanzanians have succumbed to the violence, although journalists and human rights groups report being unable to ascertain the actual number.
After she was elected President, Samia Suluhu refuted claims that Tanzanians were the ones protesting, relaying that foreigners had infiltrated its borders and were responsible for the ensuing chaos.
Although reports indicate that Kenyans might have been among the victims, only one, John Okoth Ogutu, has been identified so far.
Ogutu, who was working as a teacher in Tanzania, is said to have been killed in Ubungo, Dar es Salaam, on election day, October 29. He had been working in Tanzania for eight years before his demise.
Speaking during an interview on November 4, his sister called on President William Ruto’s administration to intervene and help bring Ogutu’s remains to Kenya.
On November 5, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino also wrote to the Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, asking him to intervene on behalf of the family to ensure Tanzania conducts a transparent investigation into the circumstances leading to his demise.
