UK police probe death of Kenyan woman killed during caregiving shift.
Police in the United Kingdom have commenced investigations into the death of Irene Wanjiru, 48, who lost her life during a caregiving shift.
Wanjiru was found dead in a patient’s home in Birmingham on June 23, just days after reuniting with her children in the UK.
The single mother of four, born in Mataara, Gatundu North in Kiambu County, spent her life looking for a better future for her children. A quest that led her to the UK in 2023, where she landed a caregiving job.
Everything went well for her, and even her eldest son was able to join her in the UK.
After several attempts, her other children also joined her, and they were preparing to finally settle down as a family when the unfortunate events unfolded.
Wanjiku had reported for her last shift before reuniting with her children.
Little did she know this would be her last day, and the dream to share a better life with them would remain that, a dream.
On the night of June 22, Wanjiru was on a night shift caring for a male patient with mental health challenges in Winson Green, Birmingham.
According to the police report, the patient turned violent and attacked her with a blunt object. She was working alone and didn’t have the chance to call for help.

Concerns began to grow when it was revealed that she missed her routine check-ins, a task she never failed to complete. This prompted swift investigations, which led them to her last shift.
By 1 am on June 23, police forced entry into the residence and discovered her lifeless body.
A man in his 30s was arrested at the scene. A post-mortem confirmed that she died from severe blunt force trauma to the head.
UK Police are still investigating the unfortunate death. Meanwhile, the death has elicited mixed reactions and concerns among Kenyans, especially those in the caregiving community.
Her family, including her brother Gilbert Mbugua, has expressed sorrow and grief following the death.
“She had just brought her twins to the UK. She was so happy. Then this…” a sad Mbugua said.
