Kenyatta University VC grilled over financial irregularities and unfair hiring

Acting Kenyatta University Vice-Chancellor (VC) Waceke Wanjohi is under scrutiny following concerns about allegations of financial irregularities and unfair hiring within the institution

Acting Kenyatta University Vice-Chancellor (VC) Waceke Wanjohi is under scrutiny following concerns about allegations of financial irregularities and unfair hiring within the institution.

Appearing before the National Assembly Public Investments Committee on Thursday, November 21, Wanjohi was also accused of failing to submit the institution’s financial statement to the Auditor General for verification on time.

The committee, chaired by Bumula Member of Parliament Wanami Wamboka, had invited the KU Vice Chancellor to respond to audit queries emanating from the Auditor General’s report.

Waceke found herself at a crossroads with the lawmakers as the MPs accused her of hindering the Auditor General’s review process through his late submissions.

Besides allegations of financial irregularities and late submissions, the Committee also questioned the VC about the ongoing lecturers’ strike which the lawmakers claimed disrupted the school’s academic calendar.

Wanjohi was also put to the task of answering allegations of favouritism through perpetrating unfair hiring practices within the institution.

The MPs also faulted the VC over the lack of a standardised curriculum for learners.

During the grilling session, the committee members cautioned that KU risked following the path of Moi University, which has faced significant challenges in the recent past.

To address the university’s deteriorating situation, the committee called for immediate intervention by the Ministry of Education. The University VC was also directed to reappear before the same committee with all relevant officers and to surrender all its documents for auditing.
