Kiraitu Murungi sends delegates to meet Deputy President William Ruto
Kiraitu Murungi, the outgoing Meru County Governor has reportedly sent delegates to meet Deputy President William Ruto.
The Devolution Empowerment Party leader (DEP) is said to have sent 13 members of the county assembly from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and 13 of his party, DEP to meet Ruto on Friday, September 2.
Speculations were rife that the party may join the Kenya Kwanza Alliance after the indoor meeting was concluded and negotiations reportedly finalized.
“We had tea at Ruto’s Karen residence awaiting the announcement,” a politician who sought anonymity told Nation Africa.
Kiraitu Murungi lost his first election in over three decades to an independent candidate, Kawira Mwangaza, who garnered 209,158 votes.
If the move to defect to Kenya Kwanza becomes successful, Ruto will have the support of 26 MCAs in the region.
The President-elect has so far convinced several parties and independent candidates to join his alliance after he was declared president-elect in the concluded August 9 polls.
Ruto has roped in on his side, Ugenya MP David Ochieng of Movement for Democracy and Growth (MDG) party, former Makueni governor Kivutha Kibwana and Mandera Senator-elect Ali Roba with his party the United Democratic Movement (UDM).
