The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) president Faith Odhiambo has called on Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei to intervene after PLP Martha Karua was denied entry to Tanzania.
Karua landed in Tanzania to appear for Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu in his legal proceedings.
Her travel documents were seized by the authorities.
Reacting to the events, Odhiambo argued it was unfortunate to have citizens’ movement curtailed despite the right existing.
“This is quite unfortunate that though we should be enjoying free movement of persons within the East African region, Kenyans can be detained for merely being lawyers. I hope Korir Sing’oei can urgently intervene,” the LSK president.
This would not be the first case in which Karua is facing obstacles in a country in East Africa.

In January this year, she featured on the defence team of Ugandan veteran opposition leader Kizza Besigye.
Besigye was abducted from Nairobi and deported to Kampala in November last year.
He was detained and later charged with treason-related counts.
Karua, who had initially been barred from representing Besigye in the court martial, fought to have her licence approved.
She was later allowed to appear in court to defend Besigye.
