Mackenzie victim recounts how sons and 10 other relatives resigned from their jobs, sold all their property and went to fast at Shakahola.

In order to join a denomination they believed would lead them to Christ, 11 members of a family from Nyamira County sold everything they owned and moved to Malindi.

Two brothers and their wives, as well as the rest of the family, sold all of their belongings, including parcels of land, resigned their well-paying occupations, and relocated to Malindi with their kids.

Speaking to the media on Sunday, April 30, the mother of the two men, Hellen Nyamoita, stated that she believed that her sons had joined the church of controversial pastor Paul Mackenzie in Kilifi.

The elderly woman recalled the last time she spoke to her sons, saying that she was shocked to learn of their departure.

“They told me that they were leaving home to go pray to God for a chance to go to heaven. I was shocked,” she stated.

In the eye of dispair, Nyamoita however noted that she was hopeful that her sons were still alive despite the reports of several people whose bodies were exhumed from the Shakahola forest.

“One of the boys was working in Westlands and the employer was understanding because he had an issue with his leg. He left the job and went to that church,” Hellen added.

Frank Mose, the brother of the missing men stated that when their kin left home, they sold land and some of their property in Nairobi including a car.

One member of member of the family was a fourth-year university student who was pursuing Public Relations at Masinde Muliro University

“They sold their property from land to the residential homes that they had built in Nairobi. One of them sold his vehicle,” Mose stated.

The brother added that his niece, the daughter of one of his brothers, made a report at one of the police stations in Nairobi when her parents forced her brothers and sisters to leave school.

“She went against her parents’ wishes and informed the police about what was going on. When her parents were summoned to record police statements, they sold everything they had and left,” he explained

Before their departure, the two men and their families were devoted members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Since the operation in Shakahola forest kicked off, over 100 bodies have been exhumed and 32 other individuals rescued after they were found alive.
