Malala accuses top UDA leaders of his ouster over DP Gachagua impeachment

Cleophas Malala has stirred the political waters, accusing senior United Democratic Alliance (UDA) figures of orchestrating his removal as the party’s Secretary General to pave the way for the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
His ouster, executed during a National Executive Council meeting on August 2, has now become a focal point in what Malala describes as a calculated coup within the party.
During a press conference on August 15, Malala, the former Kakamega Senator, launched a blistering attack on Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah and Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, whom he claims were instrumental in his ouster.
He argues that his removal is part of a broader scheme targeting Gachagua, an ally and the UDA’s Deputy Party Leader.
Malala minced no words, labelling his dismissal as a “coup,” aimed at destabilising the Deputy President’s position.
“My ouster had nothing to do with incompetence or my inability to run the UDA party but was a well-choreographed script intended to climax with the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua,” Malala asserted.
The upheaval came after weeks of intense wrangling within UDA, culminating in a decision by the party’s National Chairperson, Cecil Mbarire, to remove Malala from his post. The party’s statement was blunt: “The appointment of Cleophas Malala as the interim Secretary General is hereby revoked. These changes are effective immediately.”
Hassan Omar, UDA’s Vice Chairperson, has stepped in as the acting Secretary General, a move Malala views as further evidence of a plot. He claims that Omar was unlawfully proposed as his replacement, further entrenching the conspiracy to undermine Gachagua.
“This coup was plotted and orchestrated by two senior party officials alongside others within the party secretariat. These senior officials are Cecily Mbarire and Kimani Ichung’wah, MP for Kikuyu constituency,” Malala declared, pointing fingers squarely at the two politicians.
Malala believes his close association with Gachagua made him a target.
“My close and inevitable working relationship with the Deputy President, who is also the UDA Deputy Party Leader, irked them. When their concerted effort, lobbying, and coercion to set me against my Deputy Party Leader failed, I was effectively profiled and labelled an obstacle towards their evil plot and conspiracy to have Rigathi Gachagua impeached,” he charged.

The allegations have cast a long shadow over UDA, as it emerged that Gachagua himself was blindsided by the move. The Deputy President, according to Malala, was not consulted about the decision, leading to speculation about the true motives behind the power play.
Gachagua has reportedly expressed concerns that the ongoing wrangles within the party paint it negatively, potentially destabilising its standing.
Malala dismisses claims that the impeachment plot is linked to President William Ruto or the broader government.
Instead, he insists that the motivations are rooted in selfish political ambitions tied to the 2027 and 2032 elections, particularly from factions within the Mt. Kenya region. “These two want our Deputy President out so that they can strategically position themselves within the emerging political re-alignments,” he argued.
Despite the turmoil, Malala has opted for a measured response. While he initially considered legal action to challenge his ouster, he has chosen to seek justice through the party’s Internal Disputes Resolution Committee (IDRC).
Ichung’wah and Mbarire have not issued any response to Malala’s claims. They have been calling for unity and calling for UDA members to stay away from early politics.
