A man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison after being convicted of murdering his wife by locking her in their home and setting it ablaze.
In a statement by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) on Saturday, November 29, Robert Kipkorir Tonui was found guilty by the High Court in Bomet for the brutal murder of his wife, Emmy Chepkoech Mitei.
The court heard that on October 3, 2020, at Seanin Village in Bomet County, Tonui doused their house with petrol while his wife was inside, locked the door, and set the building on fire.
Emmy Chepkoech Mitei was rescued from the inferno but had sustained burns covering 90% of her body. She was immediately rushed to a medical facility for emergency treatment but tragically succumbed to her injuries four days later, on October 7, 2020.
After thoroughly reviewing the evidence presented, the High Court determined that the prosecution had successfully proven the murder charge beyond a reasonable doubt.
In delivering the sentence, the Court emphasized that the 40-year imprisonment term reflects the gravity of gender-based violence and is intended to serve as a strong deterrent against similar offenses in society.

In another case involving family murders, a 55-year-old man was recently sentenced to 20 years in prison after admitting to repeatedly sexually abusing his daughter over a four-year span, which resulted in her becoming pregnant.
According to an ODPP statement released on Wednesday, November 19, the convict appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate Karani in Kitui, where he confessed to defiling his daughter between 2020 and 2024.
Despite being cautioned multiple times about the seriousness of his admission and its legal ramifications, the man maintained his guilty plea throughout the court proceedings.
When the case facts were presented in court, the accused acknowledged their accuracy. In his mitigation, he simply requested that the court and prosecution take into account that he had not wasted judicial time by pleading guilty.
The convicted man is also facing an additional murder charge, accused of killing the grandfather of his daughter, the victim of his sexual abuse.
According to the ODPP, the accused had evaded authorities before his eventual arrest and appearance in court.
Due to the serious nature of the crimes, the court ordered a mental assessment to evaluate his fitness to enter a plea, which confirmed he was mentally competent.
