Man United suffer double injury blow ahead of Manchester derby
Man United suffer double injury blow ahead of derby clash with Rashford and Martial losing race to be fit for Manchester derby.
Erik ten Hag is set to be without Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial for the Manchester derby on Sunday.
At the Etihad, Man United face their local rivals in an attempt to extend their current four-match winning streak.
Martial has only played for 45 minutes this season for United, but he made an impact as a second-half substitute in a 2-1 victory over Liverpool.
But the Frenchman has been sidelined since mid-August with an Achilles issue following a hamstring strain, and this week he has yet to train.
Martial is not expected to return to training before the derby but there had been more optimism that Rashford would be fit, according to the Times.
Rashford sustained a muscle injury in United’s 3-1 win against Arsenal before the international break and was removed late on as a precaution.
He was left out of England’s Nations League squad, partly because he was injured.
Rashford was expected to be able to recuperate after a three-week break, but he hasn’t started training again, and even if he does, it’s improbable that he’ll play at the Etihad, even if he returns within the next 48 hours.
If neither of the two are available, Cristiano Ronaldo will probably be chosen to start.
Ten Hag prefers a younger front three and has not started the Portugal captain in the Premier League since a loss to Brentford.
Jadon Sancho will undoubtedly get the ball first, with Anthony Elanga and Antony vying for the third spot.
