Manchester City Squad overhaul after Champions League heartbreak against Real Madrid with mass exodus expected.

Manchester City are set for squad overhaul to refresh their squad this summer after Champions League heartbreak.

The club also hopes Pep Guardiola will extend his contract.

City are expected to sign Norway striker Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund for £63million release clause in his contract.

But City also want another midfielder, with Fernandinho due to leave at the end of the season, and doubts surrounding the futures of at least five other senior players.

The contracts of forwards Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus, midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, and top scorer Riyad Mahrez are soon to expire.

Defender Benjamin Mendy is due to go on trial in July on charges of rape and sexual assault.

Bernardo Silva has stated that he will meet with Manchester City at the conclusion of the season to discuss his future, with the club keen to re-sign the Portugal midfielder.

Before City’s late collapse in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, they were already preparing changes to the squad.

Meanwhile, City chiefs remain hopeful that Guardiola, whose contract runs until the end of next season, will sign a new deal.

They hope the prospect of one day conquering Europe with City – the Champions League being the one major trophy that still eludes them.

But Guardiola’s sole focus for now is on ensuring Wednesday’s implosion, when City conceded three goals in the space of 11 minutes to crash out to Real 6-5 on aggregate, does not derail their bid for a fourth Premier League title in five seasons.

Guardiola admitted his players were sad after the loss. According to first-team sources, there was a quiet mood in the dressing-room, rather than players calling out who was to blame. City players are often invited to speak their minds after matches but they were said to be stunned.

There will be renewal of City’s squad, although how great is likely to be influenced by the futures of Jesus, Sterling, Mahrez and Gundogan, with Guardiola claiming recently “many things are going to happen at the end of the season”.
