Matiang'i' called me for help during DCI woes; DP Gachagua claims

DP Gachagua claims former Interior CS Fred Matiang'i called him for help over the alleged home break-in

DP Gachagua claims former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i called him for help over the alleged home break-in.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua now claims that former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi called him, seeking assistance after he was detained over claims police broke into his Karen home.

Speaking in Kisii, Gachagua claimed that the former CS called him after he was ignored by retired President Uhuru Kenyatta and Opposition Chief Raila Odinga.

“It is wrong that the handshake brothers misused Matiangi …. and when he claimed that certain people went to his house, he called those people and they were not picking up his phone calls,” he quipped.

Gachagua further revealed that he remained frank with the former CS during the private conversation and even reminded him of how he (Gachagua) was mistreated in Uhuru’s administration.

“I am the one he called and I had to tell him that what he did when he was in power was wrong and he was misused.”

According to the DP, Matiang’i was not at fault and was allegedly misused by the past administration in targeting President William Ruto and his allies.

“In the previous administration, Matiang’i was used to intimidate us. Now that they are out of government, they have left him. He is now alone.

The DP also added that he promised the embattled CS that Ruto’s regime would be different in running the government and not go after those who opposed them.

Gachagua made the comments weeks after Matiang’i got a reprieve when charges against him were dropped.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) ruled in a letter to the DCI that the allegations of conspiracy to commit a felony and publishing of false information were unprovable.

After an alleged raid on his Karen house on February 8, Matiang’i had been charged by the DCI, and lawyers connected to the former CS claimed that the raid had been planned by detectives from the agency.

However, a peace between Matiang’i and the government was reportedly mediated by political figures from the Gusii region shortly after the charges were withdrawn, according to several accounts.
