The National Police Service has confirmed the death of a Kenyan police officer reported missing in Haiti in March 2025.

In a statement released on Thursday, the National Police Service has officially confirmed the tragic death of a Kenyan police officer who had been missing for months while serving with the multinational peacekeeping mission in Haiti, bringing closure to a case that had left his family in agonizing uncertainty.

According to the official police statement, the incident occurred on 26 March 2025, when the National Police Service was notified that a Kenyan police officer serving with the Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support Mission (MSSM) in Haiti was missing in action.

This notification came a day after the officer had vanished during what authorities described as hostile operations in a particularly volatile area of the country.

“The officer had been reported missing while on duty the previous day, 25th March 2025, following an ambush on the Carrefour Paye-Savien main supply route in the Port Sande area of the Artibonite Department.”

This ambush occurred on a critical supply route, and police authorities followed proper protocols in handling the crisis, as evidenced by their immediate family notification procedures.

“The National Police Service promptly informed the officer’s family of the incident and has remained in close contact, providing updates as the situation evolved,” NPS confirmed.

NPS also confirmed that the family was kept in the loop throughout the months-long search operation, with regular briefings provided as new information became available about the missing officer’s fate.

“Since then, the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSSM), in collaboration with the Haitian National Police (HNP), has been conducting a meticulous search and rescue operation to locate the missing officer,” the police service revealed.

This operation involved both ground teams and aerial reconnaissance across the gang-controlled territories where the officer disappeared, with international forces coordinating closely with local Haitian units despite the extreme security risks.

“In a tragic turn of events, the National Police Service (NPS) received information regarding the death of the missing police officer, and the family has been notified,” the statement added.

The NPS confirmed that this information came from intelligence sources in Haiti. However, officials did not specify whether the confirmation came from Haitian authorities, international partners, or other sources within the mission.

“The NPS extends its deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the fallen officer and assures them of its unwavering and continued support during this time of profound sorrow.”

The official confirmation ends a torturous period for the officer’s family, who had been caught in a web of conflicting information that forced them to seek legal intervention to obtain clarity about their loved one’s fate.

The confusion began when initial reports about the officer’s death surfaced in March, with claims that he had been killed during a gang ambush in Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s violence-torn capital.

However, police authorities initially rejected these reports, insisting that the officer was merely missing rather than deceased.

On Wednesday, the officer’s family appeared in court, having filed a petition demanding that the state provide definitive information about the officer’s status, highlighting their desperation for answers after months of contradictory information.

The court proceedings on Wednesday had exposed troubling communication gaps within government departments.

Representatives from the Attorney General’s office claimed during the session that they had not been formally notified of the officer’s death, creating confusion about which government entities were aware of the tragedy and when they had been informed.

The family specifically cited President Ruto’s remarks during a United Nations Security Council meeting on September 22, where he publicly honored fallen officers from the Haiti mission.

“I must use this occasion to honour the Kenyan officers, Samuel Kitwai, Benedict Kabiru, and Kennedy Nzuve, who lost their lives in the line of duty,” the head of state said in his speech.
