Moi wasn't scared of youth like some people around today- Uhuru takes a dig at Ruto
Former president Uhuru Kenyatta has taken a subtle jibe at President William Ruto over the recent crackdown on dissent by the youth.
Speaking at the wedding ceremony of Gideon Moi’s son, James Kimoi, Uhuru recounted how the late Daniel Moi mentored him in politics.
He recalled that Moi was an astute leader who was never scared of the young people involving themselves in uprisings during his regime.
Uhuru’s remarks seemed targeted at Ruto, whose regime has been accused of going after the young dissidents by undertaking forcible disappearances.
He maintained his call to the youth to rise against bad governance.
“I had a political father (Moi), and you know, he wasn’t scared of young people, like there are some people around here today. He didn’t panic… You guys have a future. Don’t be cowards,” he said.
At every opportunity, Uhuru has called on the young generation to challenge the political status quo and pursue change.
According to the former president, the youth have great numbers that they could leverage in fighting for good leadership.
He led Kenya as president for 10 years.
After going into retirement, Uhuru embarked on occasionally taking a swipe at the current holders of power, highlighting the challenges of leadership.

Speaking in Meru on Sunday, March 23, Uhuru explained that leadership is far from the glamorous image some may have, especially those who have not yet experienced it.
Additionally, Uhuru reflected on the joys of retiring, describing his retirement as good, especially since he retired in good health.
“Life as a retiree is very good, especially if you are retired while still healthy and energetic and when you don’t have any responsibilities. You just watch others on TV because there are those who think this job is easy.
“When they see someone powerful walking around they think the job is all about being in power; you will be surprised. I have noted that some have started being shocked already. Leadership is not an easy job,” he said.
Uhuru also took the opportunity to offer advice to the current government, urging them to listen to the issues raised by Kenyans.
“Let’s continue praying for our country and our leaders so that they open their ears and heed to the cries of the citizens that they lead,” he added.
