Mt Kenya MPs defy Ruto for the first time after State House meeting
Mt Kenya MPs defy Ruto for the first time after the State House meeting on the final list of nominees selected to join the East African Legislative (EALA)
MPs from Mount Kenya disobeyed a decision made on Wednesday, November 16, regarding the final list of candidates chosen to serve in the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).
Mwangi Maina defeated Fred Muteti, who was fronted for the EALA seat during the State House meeting, according to the official results declared on Thursday, November 17.
Mwangi wasn’t included in the original list.
Mwangi received 213 votes from the Mount Kenya MPs and joined the list of five lawmakers from the Kenya Kwanza side who will be joining the EALA.
Others who were on the final list (Hassan Omar, former Nandi woman representative, Zipporah Kering, former nominated MP, David Sankok, and Falhada Dekow Iman) sailed through in the National Assembly voting.
Despite receiving 39 votes in the Senate for the now-defunct United Republican Party (URP), which was previously led by President Ruto, Muteti was defeated in the National Assembly.
A group of politicians from Azimio la Umoja warned Ruto of an impending betrayal by Mt. Kenya lawmakers after the MPs’ vote.
They warned that Mt Kenya MPs would abandon Ruto, alluding to their dispute with former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
“Mt Kenya doesn’t condone oppression. From colonialism, they opposed white supremacy.
“If they defied their own son Uhuru Kenyatta, William Ruto be worried, the volcano will soon erupt with an avalanche of hot lava, followed by big bang theory,” Sabati MP Caleb Amisi stated.
During the voting, the Azimio side settled on Kennedy Kalonzo, Winnie Odinga, Suleiman Shahbal, and Kanini Kega.
The nine individuals are expected to serve in EALA for five years.
