Police reveal final moments of Athlete Benjamin Kiplagat before murder as two suspects are arrested.

Police officers in Eldoret have revealed the final moments of Kenyan-born athlete Benjamin Kiplagat who was found dead along the road on his way home in Kimumu on Sunday.

Speaking to the media, Moiben Sub-County Police Commandant Stephen Okal noted that the athlete was heading home in the wee hours of Sunday morning before the incident occurred.

Kiplagat, who was driving a black Toyota Hilux, was intercepted by a motorcycle which is believed to have blocked his route.

Moments later, the athlete knocked down the motorcycle and thereafter the riders are suspected to have committed the crime and fled the scene, leaving the motorcycle behind.

Okal noted that the officers were notified of an accident involving a motor vehicle and a motorcycle in the Kimumu area at around 5:00 am, only to find a deceased body in the driver’s seat.

The body, according to the officer, had multiple stab wounds on the chest and neck.

Meanwhile, police have arrested two suspects in connection with the murder of athlete Kiplangat.

“We have the two suspects in custody and they have been positively identified,” said Okal.

Police said the two were wanted criminals who had been tormenting residents of the region for long.

They added the motive of the killing appeared to be a criminal incident and that a mobile phone and money were stolen from the athlete.

“We have cast our net wide as we go on with investigations to arrest anyone else involved”, said Okal.

Kiplagat has been competing for Uganda where he holds the 3,000m steeplechase

He had previously represented Uganda at the Rio Olympic Games in 2016.

The deceased athlete had competed in a series of competitions including the Shanghai Samsung Diamond League, Lausanne Athletissima in Switzerland, Paris Meeting Areva and Hengelo Fanny Blankers-Koen Games in the Netherlands.

He began by competing in the 10,000 metres, but on the advice of his coach, he dropped down to the 1500 and 5000m and later steeplechase.
