Raila says all political parties must pick the IEBC team calling on Ruto to stop the recruitment process

Raila says all political parties must pick the IEBC team calling on Ruto to stop the recruitment process.

Azimio leader Raila Odinga now wants the selection process of election commissioners to stop, and for all political parties to be permitted to nominate the election officials, following the same procedure as in 1997.

The impasse between President Daniel Arap Moi’s administration and an opposition pushing for changes and supported by a thriving civil society was broken in 1997 by the Inter-Parties Parliamentary Group (IPPG).

President William Ruto has already chosen a seven-member selection panel to choose the chairman and six commissioners for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). Now, Mr. Odinga wants to halt the existing process.

“Kenya does not belong to one person. We must end the culture of stealing votes and that is why we want IEBC commissioners to be selected by all political parties and not a unilateral decision,” said Mr. Odinga in Narok yesterday where he addressed rallies in Ewaso Ngiro, Ntulele, and Narok Town.

He added: “We don’t want another Chebukati to be imposed on the IEBC by the Kenya Kwanza government. Azimio must sit on the table to select new commissioners.”

Raila reiterated his claim that a whistle-blower had revealed he had received 8.1 million votes compared to Ruto’s 5.9 million. He claims this allegation can only be refuted by opening the polling servers.

Mr. Odinga urged the Maasai community to participate in his call for mass action by attending the Narok rallies in force on March 20 in Nairobi to denounce the high cost of living.

Raila Odinga said he is optimistic that other Kenyans will also come to Nairobi.

“I urge all Kenyans to come out and demand their rights and prove to the Kenya Kwanza government that what is happening in the country is a violation of their freedom. There is the hope of big change in the way because this country is being mismanaged.”

The Azimio leader accused Ruto of launching a propaganda campaign to discredit the opposition and sacking those who don’t support the government and replacing them on a tribal basis.
