NTSA directs parents to contact their children's schools ahead of reopening

National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has directed parents and guardians to contact schools where children are learning

National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has directed parents and guardians to contact schools where children are learning.

In a statement on Friday, April 19, NTSA said the parents and guardians should inquire whether the school buses of the institutions have complied with all the requirements of the Traffic Act ahead of schools reopening.

“We humbly request parents/guardians to reach out to their children’s schools to establish whether they have complied with the directive and all the requirements of the Traffic Act,” NTSA stated.

This comes days after Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen ordered all learning institutions to present their vehicles to NTSA for inspection by May 1, 2024.

CS Murkomen mentioned that the inspection will assess whether the vehicles are road-worthy and have functional speed limiters.

“As public engagements on the Draft Traffic (School Transport) Rules 2024 advance, all learning institutions are required to present their vehicles for inspection by 1st May 2024 to assess their mechanical soundness and whether speed limiters installed on them are functional,” the Transport CS directed on April 9, 2024.

He also ordered all school vehicles carrying children to be restricted to operate between 6 am and 7 pm.

As of April 18, a number of schools had presented their vehicles to NTSA for inspection ahead of the May 1, 2024 deadline.

NTSA on Thursday urged schools who are yet to present their vehicles to comply with CS Murkomen’s directive and avoid inconveniences to learners and parents when schools reopen.

“We urge all schools to comply with the directive to avoid any inconveniences to learners and parents/guardians as the 1st May 2024 deadline approaches,” NTSA stated.
