Obasanjo meets Ruto moments after endorsing Raila for AU chairperson position

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo endorses Raila Odinga for the African Union (AU) Commission chairperson position

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo endorses Raila Odinga for the African Union (AU) Commission chairperson position.

Obasanjo on Thursday met with President William Ruto and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The meeting comes moments after Obasanjo endorsed Azimio leader Raila Odinga for the African Union (AU) Commission.

The next AU chair will take over from the current chair Moussa Faki Mahamat.

Obasanjo said there is so much that needs to be corrected in Africa, which will require a suitable person to lead the commission.

The former president stated during a news conference that Raila was the most qualified candidate to succeed Moussa Faki as leader.

“There is much more that is wrong with Africa today. In my part of the continent, West Africa is riddled with governments that were not installed through constitutional means. The area is riddled with insecurity, poverty, unemployment and you can say a similar thing for this part of Africa,” he said.

Obasanjo added that if AU is to serve its purpose, it will require the right person at the right time.

Speaking after the endorsement, Raila Odinga remarked that he was ready and had conviction of being the best candidate for the job.

“I have been consulting widely. I think I am ready to serve the continent of Africa,” adding that his candidacy was fueled by the belief that the continent deserved better.

“I am ready to serve Africa mainly because as a Pan-Africanist I believe strongly that Africa is playing in a league that it should not be playing. Africa deserves better,” Raila remarked while accepting the endorsement.
